Computerized fire dispatcher is cool under pressure

graphic_eqFire Department dispatchers in Marion County, Indiana have been replaced by a single female voice, and that voice isn’t human. It comes from a computer, and some in the emergency service world say it’s better than a person.

“Because it is clear, you don’t have to wait a second time to know what they’re saying,” said Debbie Farrington, an Indianapolis Fire Department private.

The system is called CADVoice by its developer, but the dispatchers at the Metropolitan Emergency Communications Agency have named it “Computer Betty.” For the past month, the $1.2 million system, designed by Locution Systems of Golden, Colo., has dispatched all fire and ambulance runs for the 10 fire departments and 70 stations handled by MECA.
