Calgary’s 911 workers to take strike vote

calgaryMore than 200 public safety communications officers working in the Calgary’s 911 centre will vote next week on whether to take strike action, but their union representative says he’s hopeful a deal can still be reached.

“At this point, the appetite is pretty strong to find a solution,” John Briegel, business manager for IBEW local 254, said Tuesday.

The communications officers –who take 911 calls and dispatch police, fire and EMS–have been without a contract since Jan. 4.

Briegel said there are two outstanding issues to be resolved with the city, neither involving money. He wouldn’t elaborate on what those concerns are, other than that they are “workplace issues.”

City spokeswoman Michelle Tetreault said contingency plans, including training other staff, are underway in the event there is strike action.
