Dispatchers Learn First-Hand at Frisco Fire Safety Town

9-1-1 in the Classroom | | August 17, 2009 at 3:08 pm

frisco-trip-09-012Class members of Powerphone’s Advanced Fire Safety Dispatch course in Frisco, TX were exposed to more than expected when they attended Dennis Bryson’s class on July 23 and 24.

Frisco, TX, a suburb of Dallas, houses a miniature town at their Central Fire Station Headquarters, aptly named “Frisco Fire Safety Town.” The outdoor village, 5/8th the size of Frisco, was developed to teach child safety in an interactive environment. Children are taught how to react in severe weather, hazardous situations, the importance of fire safety, and to call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

During the course, a fire was simulated in a Fire Safety Town bedroom. Dispatchers experienced first hand the feeling of being trapped in a burning room, and how to handle these emergency calls. The ultimate goal is to remove the caller from the smoky environment, and, if possible, safely direct them to the roof while waiting for firefighters to arrive. If that is not possible, callers are encouraged to stay on the floor where it is much cooler and they will have a better chance of survival.

After the fire simulation, dispatchers relocated to the Frisco Fire Department’s state-of-the-art classroom where they participated in a role play. The phone simulation allowed dispatchers to talk a caller through a burning room scenario. Following the role play, students listened to a real call in which a dispatcher successfully assists a caller trapped in a burning room.
