Looking for answers after Connecticut murders
9-1-1 in the News, News | Greg | August 4, 2010 at 11:49 am
The subject matter covered in PowerPhone’s Active Shooting Response course hit close to home when a man went on a killing spree at a beer distributorship in Manchester, Connecticut on Tuesday morning.
Police say Omar Thornton, 34, killed 8 people and injured two others at Hartford Distributors before turning the gun on himself Tuesday morning. The area around building remains an active crime scene.
Steve Hollander, whose family owns the Manchester business, one of the largest beer distributors in the state, said Thornton was called in for a disciplinary hearing. He chose to resign after seeing surveillance video of himself stealing beer. It was after that meeting the shootings began.
Thornton had the gun in his lunchbox. Police say they don’t know if Thornton had specific targets are just fired randomly.
“It couldn’t have happened at a worse time of day,” Teamsters union official John Hollis said. “They have third shift going on, the first shift coming on, the office staff there, the sales staff there. It couldn’t have happened at a worse time. All the drivers are picking their loads.”
