ARKANSAS — The Arkansas Emergency Telephone Services Board voted this week to disburse $120,000 to set-up a statewide training program for emergency telephone personnel.
Board member Gary Gray says most 911 operators are currently hired without any formal training. He says the training will improve services for all Arkansas taxpayers. “They will have the security to know that the individual, who is taking that emergency call was trained.”
The training may include without limitation seeking the right information and using GPS to locate callers. The training program, which is set to begin in the next few months, will take place at the Arkansas Law Enforcement Academy in Camden.
The creation of the standardized state dispatcher training program is required by Act 640 approved in March of the year 2011. The act calls for minimum training standards for 911 public safety communication center personnel throughout Arkansas, but it does not mandate dispatcher participation in the program.
