9-1-1 in the Classroom, Classroom | | August 24, 2011 at 8:03 am

BROCKPORT, NY — Wanted: A few thousand students, staff and faculty. No experience necessary. Application not required. No reference check. Job duties include implementation of common-sense rules to enhance your safety and the security of your property. Generous compensation package consists of crime prevention, leading to a safe and secure campus environment.

Sound like a great job? Then it’s yours! The department of University Police (UP) at The College at Brockport is committed to serving and protecting all members of our campus community, but we need your help. Crime is an unfortunate fact of life in our society, even at a “safe” place like Brockport. UP utilizes a variety of measures to prevent and deter crime including “Operation ID” (the engraving of a distinctive, identifying number on computers, stereos, TVs and other valuables), a 24-hour on-campus escort service, the “Blue Light” emergency telephone system, our “community policing” program and regular campus patrols on foot, bikes and in vehicles. But one of the most effective means of crime prevention is citizen awareness and involvement.

Here are a few suggestions you can use every day to help us and to protect yourself and your property:

— Do not walk alone, especially at night. If you can’t walk with a friend, then call 585-395-SAFE for an escort.

— Know the locations of the “Blue Light” phones on campus and program the emergency number for UP (585-395-2222) into your cell phone. Be aware that calling 9-1-1 from a cell phone will connect you with the Emergency Dispatch Center in Rochester, resulting in a delayed response. For the quickest response to an emergency, call the UP number listed above.

— Register for the SUNY NY-Alert mass notification system through Banner. It’s quick, simple and will allow you to receive vital information in the event of a campus emergency.

— Remember that alcohol and other drugs adversely affect judgment and behavior, and their use is frequently related to incidents of sexual assault.

— Close and lock your door every time you leave your dorm room, even if only for a few minutes.

— Lock your vehicle every time you park it and secure all valuables out of sight.

— Protect your identity by safeguarding your credit card numbers, social security number, address, date of birth, etc. Divulge this information only to persons whom you know to be authorized.

— Participate in “Operation ID” “Community Policing” and other crime prevention programs that are offered on campus.

— Be aware of your surroundings and of anything that appears to be unusual. Report suspicious conditions immediately to UP at (585)-395-2226.

The entire staff of UP welcomes you to the beginning of the 2011-12 academic year. Together, we can make it an enjoyable, rewarding and safe experience. We look forward to you working with us.
