Easton kids explore life on an ambulance

EASTON, CT — When someone calls 9-1-1 when there isn’t an emergency, the rescue crews are called away from what could be a serious situation.
This was just one of the lessons the 4- to 7-year-olds learned during a recent ambulance talk and tour at the Easton Community Center. The kids, who were attending the Wanderers Summer Camp at the community center, tried on an oxygen mask and gloves and sat inside the ambulance. When asked whether any of them had been on an ambulance before, many of the kids raised their hands.
The tour was a chance for emergency medical technicians to make the kids comfortable with the ambulance. If the kids were to be in an emergency situation, the technicians don’t want the sirens and large vehicle to scare them even more.
“When there is an emergency, it can be chaotic. We want them to learn they can go in the ambulance without being afraid,” said Peg Shukie, an EMT.
The kids cupped their hands over their ears before the sirens went off. But many slowly lowered their hands when they realized the siren wasn’t as loud as they had expected.
