Educating our youth on 911 calls
9-1-1 in the Classroom, Classroom | Caitlin | September 12, 2011 at 10:22 am
AUGUSTA, GA — It’s the kind of field trip that tells a story so much better than a textbook. Friday, youngsters checked out Augusta’s 911 Center, to find out what happens when seconds count.
Julie Hawkins’ 5th graders at Hillcrest Baptist School are learning what she calls an important lesson.
Julie Hawkins, Hillcrest Baptist School: “The fifth graders and students that are younger than them don’t fully understand what 911 is.”
But they do understand that men and women behind the scenes did their best to help those on the front lines on that fateful day.
Jayden Hudson, 5th Grade Student: “They were trying to get as many officers down there to save them as many as they can before the towers fell.”
And just like their colleagues around the country, these operators operate around the clock to keep us all safe.
Dominick Nutter, Richmond County 911 Director: “The kids are learning, what we’re ensuring this year is that we focus in on the educational aspects where we give them the cradle aspect of what actually happens when they call 911 until the first responders arrive on scene.”
Focusing on what is and what is not an emergency.
Nutter: “now if something does happen, when they make that phone call they understand what is happening, that is the big thing it is sort of ironic that they weren’t born but its preparation in case of any future events happen they’ll be better prepared and better equipped to handle that emergency.”
A good day, for some good kids, who got to leave the classroom behind and get some knowledge that, will serve them well in the real world.
Julie Hawkins (Hillcrest Baptist School): “it’s good for them to have more information about emergency services so if we were to have that kind of catastrophe in our own area then they will know what they can do.”
The Augusta’s 911 Center host this event every year, next year the call center expects more students to get involved.
