AUGUSTA, GA — A woman who calls 911 leads to her arrest after investigators find out she’s been on the lam for 17 years.
Friday, 52 year-old Sara Jean Rusher was arrested in Augusta, GA at a local Waffle House by U.S. Marshals. The warrant was issued on March 17, 1995; soon after, Rusher went on the lam with her fugitive escapee husband, David Lee Rusher.
The U.S. Marshals began looking for David Lee Rusher in February of 1995 after he escaped from a prison in Estill, South Carolina. It was believed by investigators that Sara Jean Rusher, who was also wanted by federal authorities, was with her husband after his escape.
On Thursday, investigators found the body of “James Gerald Amon” inside of a trailer in Augusta. The woman who called authorities, named “Joan Piper Duncan”, stated that her husband had passed after contracting emphysema.
An autopsy was performed and the corpse was determined to be David Lee Rusher. Upon learning that “Joan Duncan” could possibly be Sara Jean Rusher, the U.S. Marshals immediately attempted to locate her and ultimately apprehending her at a local Waffle House. Rusher eventually admitted to her identity. Rusher will be extradited back to Greensboro to answer the charges against her.
